Itinerary

  1. Stop 1 Pass by

Board M/V MONHEGAN, a beautifully restored wooden lobster boat, and cruise through Portland's Harbor, passing historic wharves from just after the Revolutionary War. You'll see the stone fortresses that once protected one of the busiest harbors in the early U.S.

  2. Stop 2 Pass by

View the smallest lighthouse on the cruise, near Casco Bay, and keep an eye out for kite flyers and even a giant purple octopus floating in the breeze. Nearby, see the statue of a Liberty Ship bow, recalling ships built here during WWII, including the famous S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien.

  3. Stop 3 Pass by

Get close to Spring Point Light and Fort Preble, a small gun emplacement built for harbor defense. Originally, ships risked grounding on shallow ledges if they went too close to the lighthouse before the granite breakwater was built.

  4. Stop 4 Pass by

Enjoy the stunning fall colors along Cape Elizabeth, home to some of Casco Bay’s most beautiful seaside homes.

  5. Stop 5 Pass by

See Portland Head Light from the water—Maine’s oldest lighthouse, built starting in 1791 and commissioned by George Washington. It’s a historic beacon that has survived hurricanes, wars, and even U-boat attacks during WWII.

  6. Stop 6 Pass by

Observe Ram Island Light, perched on a rocky ledge and appearing to float at high tide. Unlike Portland Head Light, it’s weathered and more remote, accessible only via a ladder up the outside of the lighthouse.

  7. Stop 7 Pass by

Take in views of Cushing Island’s cliffs and the quaint cottages of Peaks Island. Once home to amusement parks, Peaks Island is now a quiet neighborhood with a small year-round population, accessible only by ferry or water taxi.

  8. Stop 8 Pass by

Visit Fort Scammel on House Island, built in 1808 and active during the War of 1812. It features underground tunnels and well-preserved bastions, with tours available on select trips.

  9. Stop 9 Pass by

See Fort Gorges, a striking stone fortress built to defend Portland Harbor. Though never used in battle, it served as a storage site during WWII and played a strategic role during other conflicts.
